Real, universal distress protocol

The international aeronautical emergency frequency is 121.500 MHz (VHF Guard). In the field, transmit MAYDAY ×3, your GPS coordinates, number of people, injuries, and current weather.

A registered two-way satellite messenger (e.g. an inReach-type device) with its SOS function tied to a real rescue-coordination centre is the standard modern tool for this — carry one on any remote route, and register it with your emergency contacts before departure.
